BANG SAPHAN AND BANG SAPHAN NOI
are the final two "amphur" or Districts in Thailand's Central Region and the getaway to the Southern
Region. In the past these two districts were famed as a source of real gold, known as "Thong Neua Gow"
or "Number 9 Gold", which was recognised as the finest gold. The area therefore earned the name of
"Muang Kamnert Noppakun", meaning "Town of Pure Gold". Panning for gold was a popular livelihood and
pastime amongst the local people as could be seen from the Sub-District name of Tambon Ron Thong.

Nowadays, However, It is an activity that has almost died out and the attractions most associated with
Bang Saphan are the beautiful coral reefs around the numerous islands, and the wonderful, peaceful,
secluded beaches.
